How this calculator works
Military basic pay is a grid set by federal law. Your paygrade (E-1 through E-9, W-1 through W-5, O-1 through O-10, plus the prior-enlisted O-1E/O-2E/O-3E grades) is one axis; your total years of service is the other. We snap your years to the correct longevity bracket the way the pay table does, so 7 years reads as the "over 6" column and pay only steps up when you cross into "over 8." The cell where your grade and bracket meet is your monthly basic pay, and the annual figure is simply that times twelve.
Basic pay is the foundation of your compensation, not the whole of it. It excludes the tax-free Basic Allowance for Housing, Basic Allowance for Subsistence, and any special or incentive pays. To see your full paycheck, layer the BAH and BAS calculators on top of this number.
