Basic Allowance for Housing

2026 BAH Calculator

BAH is one line of your paycheck. Add your base pay for the full picture, or see how 2026 BAH changed by base.

How this works

Source: DoD Defense Travel Management Office BAH-ASCII files 2023-2026, 339 MHAs, 40,959 ZIPs.

Methodology: Your ZIP maps to one MHA. MHA + paygrade + dependents → monthly rate. No estimation, no marketing math.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from service members and veterans. Your exact number comes from the calculator above; every answer cites the official source.

Is BAH based on where I'm stationed or where I actually live, and does my rent change it?
BAH is set by three things only: your duty-station ZIP code, your pay grade, and whether you have dependents. It is not based on your real address or your actual rent. If your housing costs less than BAH you keep the difference; if it costs more, you cover the gap. Living somewhere cheaper does not reduce it, and living somewhere pricier does not raise it. Run the calculator with your ZIP, grade, and dependent status for your exact rate.

Do I get more BAH if I have a spouse and kids than someone single?
Yes, but only in two tiers. There is a 'with dependents' rate and a 'without dependents' rate per grade and location. The with-dependents rate is higher, but it is a single flat amount: one dependent or five pays exactly the same. Number of children does not change BAH. Use the calculator and toggle dependent status to see both rates for your ZIP.

Is BAH taxable, and why isn't it on my W-2?
BAH is a non-taxable allowance. It does not appear in Box 1 of your W-2 and is not federal taxable income, which is why your LES total looks larger than your W-2 wages. Nothing is missing: the W-2 shows only what the IRS can tax (basic pay plus taxable special pays), while the LES shows total compensation. Lenders may still count BAH for loan qualifying.

If BAH rates drop in my area this year, does my allowance get cut?
No, individual rate protection applies. As long as your status stays the same (no PCS, no downward pay-grade change, no dependency change), your BAH will not decrease even if the published rate for your area falls. New January rates can only raise you while you stay put. A move, promotion, or dependency change resets you to the current published rate. Rates reset every January 1.

Do I get BAH if I live in the barracks?
Generally no. Single members living in government quarters or barracks usually do not draw BAH because housing is provided in kind. Members authorized to live off base, or members with dependents, normally draw BAH. Rules vary by status and orders, so confirm with Finance. To compare what off-base BAH would be for your grade and ZIP, run the calculator.

We're a dual-military couple with kids, who gets BAH 'with dependents'?
A service member can never be claimed as the other's dependent, so each draws their own BAH. Without kids, both draw the single (without-dependents) rate. With kids, typically the higher-paid member claims the children and draws the with-dependents rate while the other draws single. If they live apart with at least one child each, both can potentially draw the with-dependents rate. Confirm with Finance for your orders.

Will my first paycheck include BAH, and is it prorated?
Pay and allowances accrue from your entry date and are paid for qualifying days, so your first (and last) month are commonly prorated at 1/30th of the monthly rate per day rather than a full month. Allowances may also lag until DEERS and Finance process your paperwork, with back pay catching up later. You are paid on the 1st and 15th. The calculator shows your full monthly BAH so you know what to expect once it stabilizes.
